Milan Katić (Samobor, 1900 – Zagreb, 1969) graduated from the Music
Conservatory in Zagreb in the department of conducting. However, he chose to
become a journalist, writing art critiques and edited the newspaper culture
sections. He began to work in film in 1942 as a screenwriter, (he co-wrote the
script for the film Lisinski, 1944, by Oktavijan Miletić). His directing
debut came in 1946, and he afterwards directed a number of documentaries,
(debut: Proslava Prvog maja 1946). His most successful films include
Snaga i mladost (ZREN) (1946), Na izbore (1946), Iz tame u
svjetlost (1947), Spomenik zahvalnosti Crvenoj armiji (1948).
Altogether he made 17 films, (alone or with other directors), and retired in
1957. In 1948, he was the director of the monthly film news Filmski pregled.
He remains one of the most esteemed film documentary makers, winning many awards
after WW II.
