Shindô is a Japanese screenwriter and director who wrote more than screenplays and directed 43 of them. He made his directing debut with the intimate film Story of a Beloved Wife (Aisai monogatari, 1951). Afterwards he made Children of Hiroshima (Gembaku no ko, 1952), Wolf (Okami, 1955), An Actress (Joyu, 1956), Lucky Dragon No. 5 (Daigo Fukuryu-Mayu, 1958), Naked Island (Hadaka no shima, 1960), Devil Woman (Onibaba, 1964), The Black Cat (Yabu no naka no kuroneko, 1968), Love Betrayed (Kokoro, 1973), The Life of Chikuzan (Chikuzan hitori tabi, 1977), The Horizon (Chihei-sen, 1984), A Last Note (Gogo no Yuigon-jo, 1995), By Player (Sanmon yakusha, 2000), Owl (Fukuro, 2003).

Synopsis:

This is a biography of the famous character actor Taiji Tonoyama who started acting in 1950s. He played in more than 250 films and collaborated with Kaneto Shindô. Tonoyami’s first leading role was in Shindô’s film Hadaka no shima (1960). In Taiji’s biography we learn about his relationship with his wife Asako and his young mistress Kimie.

Synopsis:

In March of 1954, as part of their tests the US Army detonated a hydrogen bomb on the Bikini atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Due to bad calculations, it resulted in a catastrophic rain of radioactive dust that landed on a Japanese fishing boat Daigo Fukuryu-Maru, which was, at the time, 160 kilometers away from the atoll. All the members of the crew got sick and the hero of this film died in September of the same year.
