Director’s sister plays the young Anita who emigrated from East Germany to the West and is trying to find her place in the new environment. She hopes for a better life, but soon runs into trouble with the law. She becomes her boss’ lover but leaves him and the job when she gets falsely accused of stealing. She does not manage to find her place in the former communist or the contemporary society and becomes a drifter.

This film won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
