Director

In his teenage years, Krešo Golik started to work on film as an amateur in the community Romanija (together with Nikola Tanhofer, Ivan Hetrich and brothers Neugebauer), and made his debut as a professional director with the notable short documentary Jedan brod je zaplovio (Another Ship Sets Sail Again, 1948). Two years later, he made his first feature film, a melodrama about soccer with elements of comedy, Plavi 9. Afterwards, he made his films Djevojka i hrast (The Girl and the Oak, 1955), Kala (1958), Imam dvije mame i dva tate (I Have Two Mothers and Two Fathers, 1968), Tko pjeva zlo ne misli (He Who Sings Means No Harm, 1970), Živjeti od ljubavi (To Live on Love, 1973), Razmeđa (1973), Ljubica (Violet, 1978), Vila Orhideja (1988), and the legendary TV series Gruntovčani (1975) based on Mladen Kerstner’s screenplay, as well as Dirigenti i mužikaši (1991). From 1979 until his retirement in 1989, he taught film direction at the Academy for Drama Arts in Zagreb.

Although Zlatko is not much concerned about bourgeois views of his parents and is quite fond of Ljubica, it seems that their relationship has no future...

In order to indicate the unbreakable bond between the history of Croatian cinema and television, especially in the so-called golden age of the TV Zagreb in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, we include the first part of the TV series Gruntovčani by the director Krešo Golik and screenwriter Mladen Kerstner in this retrospective. Golik’s magnum opus is along with Naše malo misto one of the most popular Croatian series and common cultural heritage.

Synopsis:

The story takes place in Zagreb at the beginning 1930s. Young and attractive Mrs. Ana Šafranek starts to feel unhappy in her marriage to an older husband, Franjo. During their trip to Samobor, the charming Mr Fulir conquers Ana’s heart and, soon after their return to Zagreb, he visits her at home. Ana’s sister Mina, an old spinster, also likes Mr. Fulir and Franjo gets the idea to marry Mina to Mr. Fulir. Ana and Franjo’s small son Perica witnesses all of these adventures.

Kala

Before WW II, a German shepherd Kala belongs to the young Andrej and bravely fights off the wolves which attack the village. Yugoslav army surrenders and Germans occupy the country. This documentary describes the development of agricultural cooperatives in Slavonia and Baranja. After the arrival of colonists to the plains of Slavonia, working cooperatives are formed and people start to work in them. Agricultural equipment is modernized, work is better organized and outbuildings and silos are built. The film ends with the scene showing the annual meeting of the agricultural cooperative in Sesvetski Kraljevec. Other cooperatives are shown or mentioned in the same documentary....

Overview no. 3: One more ship sails away

This issue of the Overview is entirely devoted to the retrieval of the motor ship Ramb from the sea, which sank in 1944 in Rijeka’s harbor. It was also shown as a documentary under the title One More Ship Sails Away and it was Golik’s first author piece. He used the same theme of retrieving a sunk boat in his first feature film Plavi 9 (1950).
